Internship Title: Human Events Intern
Employer: Human Events, Washington, D.C. 20001
Summer Housing: The West End Building, George Washington University
Describe your duties:
Cover events on Capitol Hill, actively report political news, upload articles to Human Events website, engage in campaign finance research.
Why did you accept this particular internship?
I gained my internship through the Young America's Foundation National Journalism Center, which is dedicated to advancing the careers of young clear thinking journalists. I found their dedication to the principles of limited government, free market economics and individual freedom highly appealing.
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed the first hand exposure to events taking place on Capitol Hill and the opportunity to work with high caliber professionals on a daily basis. The fast paced environment and sheer number of significant changes taking place on the Hill this past summer made for an excellent experience.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
Balancing my time was the greatest challenge of the internship. From guest speakers at Georgetown to waterfront concerts in Annapolis, there were so many events to get involved in. Taking advantage of all the different opportunities was exhausting but looking back I am glad that I pushed myself.
How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship?
Involvement in the Bucknell University Conservatives Club made this internship possible however the CDC guidance on resume presentation and interviews were key to sealing the deal.
How did your internship prepare you for a career?
This summer internship has laid the groundwork for any career I find myself pursuing in journalism, government or business.
What recommendations do you have for other students considering internships?
Seize the opportunity as soon as you discover it. Don't waste time deciding whether or not it is right for you, if you are paid enough, or if you will be able to secure housing, etc. It is ALWAYS worth putting yourself in the running. Best scenario you land a terrific internship, worst case you get your name out there and meet interesting people along the way.
