Internship Title: Operations Summer Analyst (Margins Valuation and Pricing Department)
Employer and location: Goldman Sachs, Jersey City, New Jersey
Describe your duties:
As a member of the Margins, Valuation and Pricing Department, we were responsible for managing the risk for derivatives trades. Accordingly, I assisted my team with running reports that ensured trades were being margined correctly. I also created flowcharts outlining the team's functions to be used as training materials. Further, my program culminated in a research project and presentation that integrated my knowledge of my team's duties with the discussion of a current event.
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed the structure of the program, specifically the Learning Series, which was a series of talks given by employees that had varying degrees of experience within the firm, offering advice and guidance. Further, the atmosphere was extremely welcoming and everyone I met was more than willing to help me with projects or offer time to talk with me about their careers and experiences.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
I was expected to accomplish many things by the end of the summer, juggling multiple projects throughout, and the most difficult aspect was time management. I also found that managing others' expectations of me was difficult, in terms of what I was expected to complete, by when, and the best way to go about doing it, which also proved to be a valuable learning experience.
How did your experience at Bucknell prepare you for your internship? How did your internship prepare you for a career?
The time management skills that I've learned and used at Bucknell helped me prioritize my work throughout the summer. Further, because I was treated as a first year analyst as opposed to an intern, my experience gave me a clear picture of what working in the industry would actually be like if I entered right after college.
What recommendations do you have for other students considering doing an internship?
Start applying early, and apply to many! It is better to be in a conundrum deciding between several good internship opportunities rather than having no options. Once you have the internship, it is crucial to take advantage of the opportunities available such as taking the time to meet with and shadow people in other departments. During my summer, I strived to strike a balance between getting my work done well and learning from others and networking.
