Our Mission

The mission of the Bucknell ESL Tutoring Program is to support English Language Learners in local school districts throughout the second language acquisition process by entering classrooms and community sites to provide educational assistance and a positive working environment.

We provide these services in the spirit of sharing resources and using the skills and education we have acquired. At the same time, we respect the English language learners we serve and seek to learn from their experiences and interactions with us so that we might better serve their needs and build cooperation and opportunities for empowerment.

Program Details

Our ESL tutoring program places Bucknell volunteers with English language learners in local school districts and other community sites. Volunteers typically go into the schools once a week to work one-on-one with an ESL student, helping them with academics or just adjusting to US culture.  Tutoring sessions can take place any time between 8 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Monday through Friday, depending on the volunteer and student's schedules.

Student volunteers, coordinated by the Office of Civic Engagement staff, provide individual attention, focusing on homework help and supplemental educational material in all subject areas. We work closely with students' teachers to determine how to best help these students in their second language acquisition process. Most of the ESL students we serve speak Spanish, but second-language experience is not a requirement to participate in this program.
