In general, Bucknell University does not expect to provide housing for any faculty or staff member. The University encourages the use of the local rental market and for those who are able and interested, encourages individual home ownership by permanent members of the staff both through general provision of information, as well as through the mortgage guarantee program.

Mortgage Guarantee Program

The University will guarantee mortgage loans made by local banks for the purchase of a primary residence in the Lewisburg area up to 20% of appraised value or sale price (whichever is lower). Potential buyers must be moving into the area from a distance of 50 miles or more, and must apply for the mortgage guarantee program within five years of their date of employment. Banking regulations require a 5% down payment.

For more information, consult the Finance Office at finance@bucknell.edu.

Limited Number of University Rentals

The University does own some properties that are rented by members of the faculty and staff.  Preference for assignment of vacancies in University housing facilities is given to incoming members of the staff with responsibilities that require them to be on or near campus. Other incoming members will be considered for housing in the order of application. Facilities rented to new members of the staff will generally be a maximum of twelve month lease at the rent specified in the lease agreement. The first lease term will begin on the date of arrival and expire June 30 the following year. If the staff member requests to remain in the unit beyond the first year, the rental rate will increase 5% and the lease term will be July 1 through June 30 the following year. The maximum term in any University rental is three years.

How to Apply for a Rental

New faculty and staff should contact Lori Wilson (lwilson@bucknell.edu), Director Business Services in the Finance Office to have his or her name placed on the housing request list. The number of vacancies varies from year to year and the number of requests usually well exceeds the available units, therefore housing may not be available to meet all requests. New faculty and staff should also be encouraged to investigate other rental options in the local communities.
