Bucknell University Intelligence (BUI)

BUI is our broad, cross-university program aimed at defining, aggregating and enabling more efficient and strategic use of our data.

Thanks to partnerships with the Registrar's Office, Library & Information Technology and Enrollment Management, most student data has been through the BUI program processes and is being widely used across those offices. In addition, BUI projects from earlier phases are being actively used to track and benchmark withdrawal and retention metrics. While other offices on campus continue to broaden the available data beyond students, new ways of visualizing existing data are also underway in the form of executive and public dashboards designed to illuminate key metrics of the University.

Open Education Resources

In Fall 2012, President John Bravman and Provost Mick Smyer appointed a Bucknell Task Force on Integrating Open Educational Resources (OER) and Residential Learning. Comprised of faculty, staff, and students, the task force was charged with exploring the role of open educational resources and hybrid learning at a residential liberal arts institution like Bucknell. The University has long seen in-depth faculty-student interaction as one of its educational strengths, so investigating the role OER could play proved to be a robust topic for further discussion

Since the report's release in April 2013, Library and IT staff have been busy building the foundations for many of its recommendations, including cultivating support for faculty interested in creating and using digital resources to enhance teaching and learning. One major recommendation encouraged further exploration of flipped classroom methodologies and
their potential applicability to courses across the Bucknell curriculum.

Digital  Initiatives

DIGITAL @ BUCKNELL At Bucknell, digital technology powers innovative teaching, research, and student experiences. This Bucknell Digital Initiatives portal gives an overview of some of the most important and exciting digital work happening at Bucknell.

DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP Bucknell's Bertrand Library is home to the Digital Scholarship Center, a public-facing space dedicated to digital collaboration, innovation, teaching and research.

DIGITAL PEDAGOGY Bucknell is helping faculty develop innovative ways to apply digital technology to teaching, creating unique and powerful learning experiences for students. Bucknell students, in turn, are building robust portfolios of creative and scholarly digital work.

Information Security

Working towards a safer and more secure digital environment, L&IT has developed two new information security policies which clarify the way that we interact with key systems and university data. Our Data Classification Policy defines the three types of data which exist on our campus - Confidential, Sensitive, and Public - and outlines the protections necessary for each class. The Information Security Policy for Mobile and Remote Devices, critical for our increasingly mobile world, established the framework necessary to enable the use of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, as well as remote devices such as home computers, in a safe and secure way. These policies were developed through close collaboration with our faculty and staff governance organizations and have been approved for widespread adoption by senior staff.
