The CDC and World Health Organization continue to monitor and respond to the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa. Since mid-August, they have raised the virus from a Level-1 to a Level-3 alert for West Africa. The countries of Nigeria, Liberia, New Guinea and Sierra Leone have been affected to date.

Bucknell has NO students coming to campus from these affected regions.

About Ebola

Ebola is spread only through bodily fluids. In order to be considered high risk, you must have come from or have traveled to West Africa in the past 21 days and had contact with an infected individual, eaten bush meat, eaten wild animals or had contact with contaminated needles or bodily fluids. Symptoms may appear from two hours to 21 days after exposure, however, eight to 10 days is the most common timeframe. Please report your recent travel history to medical personnel upon arrival for treatment if you are experiencing symptoms. If these requirements are met and the person has no flu-like symptoms or signs of hemorrhage, no testing is done.

For Travelers

If you are considering traveling to West Africa, please make an appointment with BSH for pre-travel counseling. If you have recently traveled to these countries, please be aware of the symptoms of Ebola virus disease and seek medical attention immediately if any symptoms develop.

Bucknell Student Health will be closely following the recommendations of the CDC and keep our campus updated as changes develop. Please refer to the CDC website at for more details. I recommend reviewing the four points you should know about Ebola. If you have specific concerns regarding your health, please contact our office.
