The ideal letter of recommendation comes from someone who
- knows the student well in the context of the specific fellowship,
- can evaluate her/his performance and potential in detail, and
- will write on her/his behalf with obvious interest and enthusiasm.
Students, see Requesting a Letter of Recommendation (pdf) for suggestions about how to request a letter, what information to provide to your referee, and when to follow up.
Faculty, see Providing a Letter for Recommendation (pdf) for traits of an effective letter and some general tips.
