Students gain a firm understanding of music fundamentals while exploring their unique interests under the direction of exceptional faculty. New faculty members bring expanded course offerings in music education, ethnomusicology, electro-acoustic music, and jazz to the curriculum.

With Jazz & Theory faculty member Barry Long, students are exposed to the process of making jazz, from theory and lessons with masters to lectures, behind-the-scenes rehearsals, and performances.

The Kushell Music Endowment allows the department to bring nationally-recognized artists for residencies that include class visits, one-on-one and chamber ensemble instruction. Recent Kushell performers include The Fitzwilliam String Quartet,  ethnomusicologist and composer Shirish Korde, Dutch pianist Bart Van Oort, premiere Jazz bassist Rufus Reid, and composer Samuel Hazo.
