ABET, Inc. requires that all engineering degree programs use a continuous improvement process that evaluates the attainment by graduates of a required set of student learning outcomes ABET Student Outcomes 3(a)-(k). All accredited engineering degree programs are also required to contain a prescribed set of curricular elements that are listed as ABET Criterion 5. The required ABET Student Outcomes (a)-(k) have been mapped to the Bucknell University Educational Goals by the Engineering Curriculum Committee. Criterion 5 is also included in this mapping to demonstrate the additional academic opportunities in the engineering degree programs to gain the knowledge, skills and perspectives needed to attain the University Educational Goals. Following this section are the mission, the Program Educational Outcomes, and the Student Learning Outcomes for each degree program.

ABET Criterion 3. Student Outcomes Engineering programs must demonstrate that their students attain the following outcomes:
(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
(d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
(g) an ability to communicate effectively
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
ABET Criterion 5.
1. One year of mathematics and basic sciences, some with experimental experience
2. One and one-half years of engineering topics, consisting of engineering sciences and engineering design courses.
3. General Education Program Two courses from the list of approved engineering humanities courses; in some curricula one must be a first year course in English Literature and Composition Two courses from the list of approved engineering social science courses One course from either the list of approved engineering humanities courses or the list of approved engineering social science courses. Of the five courses listed above, two must be from the same department or one must be at the 200+ level. Of these five courses, one must be a course that focuses on Global and Societal Perspectives. All students must fulfill the university writing requirement.
