Mission Statement:

Bucknell University's civil and environmental engineering programs strive to provide the best undergraduate civil and environmental engineering education possible within a four-year curriculum. The civil and environmental engineering degree programs seek to prepare our students to become responsible, contributing members of society, and to continue to develop personally and professionally after graduation. The programs are designed to ensure that our students are qualified to enter, and succeed in, the civil or environmental engineering profession, enroll in graduate programs in civil or environmental engineering, or enter related industrial and business professions. Primary emphasis is placed on educational excellence achieved through a coherent and comprehensive curriculum, outstanding teaching, extensive student-faculty interaction, small class sizes, substantial laboratory and field trip experiences, and faculty scholarship that often directly involves students.  

Program Goals  

The civil and environmental engineering programs seek to prepare students to be successful professionals recognized for their:

1) critical thinking and problem solving based on a fundamental knowledge of humanities, social sciences, mathematics, science, engineering sciences, and a broad range of civil engineering technical areas;

2) consideration of global and societal concerns, ethics, and sustainability when making engineering decisions;

3) leadership and effective communication;

4) civil engagement and contributions to society; and

5) pursuit of lifelong learning and professional development.  

Program Educational Objectives:

  • Graduates will attain a record of engagement in civil engineering or other fields that require analytical and/or professional abilities.
  • Graduates will attain a record of continuing professional development.
  • Graduates will attain a record of contribution to their fields, professions, or society.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Graduates of the program shall demonstrate:

3a. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering  

3b. An ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze and interpret data.  

3c. An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.   

3d. An ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.  

3e  An ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.  

3f. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.  

3g. An ability to communicate effectively.  

3h. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.  

3i. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.  

3j. A knowledge of contemporary issues.  

3k. An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
