The Project Development Laboratory (PDL) is a manufacturing facility located in the ground floor of the Dana Engineering building. It is designed to support senior design projects, produce new lab equipment, repair and remanufacture parts, construct the mini baja car, support the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) with their design and fabrication needs, and is used to instruct the MECH 151 manufacturing technology course.
Conventional machine tools such as lathes, bridgeport milling machines, drill presses, and grinding machines make up the lab. The sheet metal equipment is located in a separate section of the lab and is used for light gage sheet metal fabrication. Welding is in its own area and equipped to do shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and oxyacetylene welding.
The non-conventional machining, or our concept-to-finished-product capabilities, consists of computer aided design (CAD) and computer aided manufacturing (CAM). There are three CAM machines, a bridgeport R2E4 machine center, a bridgeport TORQ-CUT 22 machining center with a 22 station tool changer, and a south bend CNC lathe.
This combination of machine tool technology provides our engineering students, faculty, and staff with the latest in conventional machining and high end CAD/CAM capabilities.
