Polymers Laboratory

Polymers are very large molecules which we encounter daily as the materials commonly referred to as plastics, rubbers, adhesives and coatings. Even foods and many parts of our bodies are composed of polymers! While humans have been using natural polymers as useful materials for thousands of years (wood, silk, and leather, for example), the study of making polymers and controlling their properties continues to be at the forefront of many emerging technologies such as microelectronics, composites, and biomedical engineering.

The Polymers Laboratory at Bucknell offers equipment and experiments that cover a wide range of topics, from synthesis of large molecules (e.g., bulk and emulsion polymerization), to polymer characterization (e.g., mechanical and electrical properties, chemical and molecular weight analysis, microscopy), to parts fabrication (e.g., extrusion and injection molding).
