This summer I worked on a kinematic data capture smartphone app for the KICR (Kinematic Information Capture and Reporting) project. This research was funded by the Bucknell Program for Undergraduate Research, under supervision of Professor Stu Thompson.

The KICR project's main goal is to develop a system that collects a patient's movement data via mobile computing devices. The data is then aggregated, analyzed and delivered to a clinician for use during the diagnostic process. My main job was to develop the data capture app that collects sensor data from smartphone to prepare the data for analysis. We expect that the app is going to run for a long period of time on the phone, so it needed to be optimized for energy efficiency. Although the app was specifically designed for the KICR project, it can help a researcher explore motion-sensor data in other contexts.

I developed the app on two different frameworks: PhoneGap, a multiplatform framework using HTML5; and the Android Development Kit. The PhoneGap platform is somewhat limited and also consumes a lot of resources, so in the end I only focused on making the native Android app. To optimize resources, I put all sensor activities into a background service so that it can still record even when the phone is sleeping. I also added some customizable features such as sensor selection, variable capture rates and emailing of log files. The final output of the app is sensor log files in comma-separated value form.

I did some analysis on app performance and the consistency of sensor log files. The result was that the phone can capture data at an acceptable rate at regular intervals. The app that I developed was used in a fidget movement capture test with the purpose of understanding human movement data captured by the phone.
