Melissa developed a procedure to create digital 3D representations of patient hearts by segmentation of gated thoracic computed-tomography images obtained from Geisinger Medical Center. Surface descriptions of the reconstruction were created and sent to the Stratasys Vantage fused deposition modeler, which produced a plastic model of the heart and great vessels. These physical patient-specific models will help cardiologists and surgeons better understand cardiac anatomy in patients with congenital heart disease, aiding in diagnosis, treatment, and surgical planning and leading in turn to improved care and outcomes.
