Your Bison Laptop comes ready for use. There are a few items that you may want to consider bringing with you to campus. These items can be purchased through the Lenovo and Apple stores or through your favorite local store. (See a quick pdf reference for Lenovo Accessories.)
Even though most of campus is wireless, you will want to connect to the wired network when in your room. A wired connection is faster, more stable and more secure.
No drive manufacturer has ever produced a failproof hard drive. We've seen drives fail in every computer model at the Tech Desk; often without much warning, and sometimes data is unrecoverable. Protect yourself by backing up your data!
You can buy a drive for as little as $70 and just drag your important folders to it. Or you can invest a little more in a drive that comes with its own back up software to do this for you automatically. Macs come with Time Machine and do not require any additional software. Once configured your laptop will back up automatically whenever the drive is connected.
Bucknell can offer excellent prices on external hard drives right in the Accessories section on Lenovo's site, and they're available directly from the Apple store as well
Since one of the best features of your laptop is portability, you should invest in a case, backpack or bag that will allow you to safely take your laptop with you to class, the library or anywhere. We recommend something specifically designed for laptops.
Back up your data, especially your papers on a USB key, thumb, or jump drive. You can transfer your files, move things around, and easily access items from anywhere.
Don't risk your laptop plus all the data (notes, papers, music, etc.) stored on it. Secure your laptop with a laptop lock.
All Bison laptops work with USB mice and keyboards.
Bucknell has printers in labs across campus, and we can set up your Bison Laptop to print to these campus printers. Still, some students often find it handy to have their own printer. HP, Epson, Canon, Dell, and Brother are popular USB inkjet brands. NOTE: Wireless printers will not work in Bucknell's residence halls.
