"Learning in a One Room Buggy School" Dr. Katharyn Nottis

Monday, Sept. 16 at noon in 268 Olin Science

Abstract: In Spring, 2005, a partnership was established between the Bucknell University Education Department and the staff of a library with an Amish Outreach Program in central Pennsylvania after they requested some assistance. This request eventually led to a unique course where, using the Japanese lesson study format, students design and teach environmental science and math lessons to children in area one-room "buggy" schools. The learning that has occurred for Bucknell participants has gone beyond the acquisition of curricular strategies and teaching confidence. This presentation will share a qualitative look at the reflections of students who have participated in this experience these past years. This presentation should appeal to those interested in the learning benefits from non-traditional course experiences as well as those with an interest in diversity, children's studies, and teaching. PIZZA/CALZONES and DRINKS will be provided.
