"When Meghann Muirhead, Class of 2009, began her job search, she wasn't sure what prospective employers would think of her somewhat unusual choice of major: geography.

Employers often had misconceptions of what majoring in geography entails," says Muirhead. But that lack of understanding turned out to be a door opener.

"Employers are looking for something that stands out in a candidate's background, and geography does just that. My major was always a main topic of conversation."


Meghann took advantage of the opportunity to let employers know that studying geography at Bucknell involves much, much more than learning how to use the tools of the trade, maps and GIS.

"I explained to them that geography is so much more than the subject we all took in junior high, and how it allowed me to study many topics I enjoyed through spatial analysis." As a result, Meghann received five job offers.

She took a job as marketing coordinator for Walt Disney Studios, and now works for a consulting firm that performs energy auditing and environmental building. "Overall, I cannot recommend geography enough because it has truly helped me in so many ways. Just like the field itself, the possibilities of what a geography major can do after graduation are boundless."
