Majoring in English and history, Martie Lauver received a degree in education. While a student, she was features editor of L'Agenda, a member of Cap and Dagger, a dormitory head resident, and elected to history and education honorary societies. A few weeks after graduation, she married Ed Samek '58 and they raised three daughters, all of whom are Bucknell graduates - Anne '86, Margaret (Meg) '88 and Elizabeth (Lizzie) '91.
A member of the Bucknell Board of Trustees, Martie has been a loyal and tireless volunteer. After she served three terms as president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, the library in the Alumni House was named in her honor. She was an alumni trustee on the Board of Trustees from 1993-98 and was re-elected to the board in 2002.
She has chaired her 25th and 30th reunions and served as the Central New Jersey cochair for The Bucknell Campaign. Martie and Ed cochaired the Development Committee of the Parents Association, helping to initiate the Bucknell Parents' Fund, which has become one of the most successful collegiate parent funds in the nation. The Sameks have hosted numerous receptions for incoming students and established the Samek Family Scholarship. In 2001, the university's art gallery was dedicated as the Samek Gallery.
