Awarded to an alumnus or alumna whose professional accomplishments and achievements are exceptionally noteworthy and distinctive in his/her profession.

Physician, surgeon, teacher, lecturer, consultant — John Bergfeld played varsity football at Bucknell, was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, and a participant in the premedical society. After graduation, he entered Temple Medical School where he finished his degree and met his wife, Wilma, who is also a physician.

Today, he is the head of Sports Medicine in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. He also is the team physician for the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and serves as consultant to the Cleveland Ballet, the U.S. Nordic Ski Team, and Cleveland State University. He is the president of the American College of Sports Medicine. His daughter, Onee, is a member of the Class of 1986.
