"This dance company can wake up the neighborhood with a sudden, brassy shout or it can croon softly in your ear, whispering words of love." The Star Ledger

From its grassroots origins as a dance school and community-based performing arts troupe, Ballet Hispanico has grown into a world class institution. Now under the artistic direction of Eduardo Vilaro, a former principal dancer with the Ballet Hispanico Company, the Company performs a diverse repertory by the foremost choreographers of our time as well as emerging artists.

The works fuse Latin dance with classical and contemporary techniques to create a new style of concert dance in which theatricality and passion propel every move.

The choreographers represent a multitude of nationalities including Venezuela, Cuba, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia.

The Company has offered over 3,350 performances to audiences of over two million throughout 11 countries.

Their Weis Center performance will include four pieces:

  • Jardi Tancat
  • Sombrerisimo
  • Sortijas
  • Mad’moiselle

Please note: There will be two 15-minute intermissions.

Jardi Tancat is based on Catalonian folk tales sung by Maria del Mar Bonet and won first prize at the International Choreographic Workshop in Cologne. With equal shades of passion and melancholy, the ballet evokes the despairing yet hopeful prayers of Spaniards who wait for rain on their barren land.

Sombrerísimo is  an absorbing exploration of individuality. Sombrerísimo is an athletic tour de force for six men, full of rhythmic agility and stylistic flair. The work was specially commissioned for the 10th anniversary of New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival.

Sortijas (Rings) is a duet that celebrates Latino tradition by representing the circular ties of family and friends that link communities together over generations.

Mad’moiselle a new work that explores iconic male/female images and gender identity in Latin American cultures.
