Kathy and Bill LaPoint P'14, P'17 were among the first in their families to attend college, an opportunity neither took for granted. The parents of two Bucknellians say they were both fortunate enough to obtain a college education because someone before them provided the means for them to do so. "We firmly believe that we should give back and provide for the next generation of students, particularly those who cannot afford a school like Bucknell."
The LaPoints recently pledged to create an endowed scholarship for first-generation students. "Bill and I were planning to make a gift, but when the Malesardi Match became available, we were inspired," says Kathy, who is a University trustee. "I had the opportunity to meet the Malesardis, who are a lovely, humble couple. When you see the good work they are doing, it provides inspiration for everyone to make a gift."
Both LaPoints hope Bucknell continues to enroll more diverse students to promote learning from different perspectives. Gifts to financial aid, they say, support the University's overall mission of enrolling the brightest students regardless of their ability to pay. "It helps Bucknell stay academically excellent," Bill says.
