“During my externship, I saw many different aspects of the eye-care industry. I observed three different types of eye surgery as well as many regular patient visits. I was also able to talk to two optometry school students and ask them questions about their experiences and plans for the future.”
Available to sophomores, a Bucknell externship consists of two consecutive days shadowing a sponsor, observing, and gaining a better understanding of day-to-day workplace activity and culture.
Students benefit from early exposure to career and industry paths, which informs their decisions about choice of major, coursework and internship selection. In addition, externships help prepare students for networking with alumni, parents, friends and employers.
Sponsors benefit by becoming more involved with the larger Bucknell community in both the volunteer and career-networking realms. In addition, the program can assist with early identification of future student employees and/or interns.
