When I found out about the Arts Merit Scholarship at Bucknell, I was floored because I had found a university that put special emphasis on writing and the arts.
"At my high school, the teacher-student relationships are very close. I became used to that, so I knew I wanted a university that offered the same. When I found out about the Arts Merit Scholarship at Bucknell, I was floored because I had found a university that put special emphasis on writing and the arts.
"When I came for the Arts Merit selection weekend, I was so impressed. My dad and I couldn't believe that Bucknell had an entire building dedicated to just poetry. The professors I met were engaging and it felt like a place where I could grow as a writer and poet. Since being here, I've become more involved with the Stadler Center for Poetry. I was an intern, but then was encouraged by the director, Professor Shara McCallum, to apply to become a student assistant.
"Professor McCallum has been very influential in my time here. I took her Creative Writing: Poetry course and instantly connected with her. She aided me in workshops and helped me to further develop my work. She is one of the many professors here that I admire. My advisor, Professor G.C. Waldrep, has been another great source of inspiration. I took my freshman seminar, Apocalyptic Literature, with him and was fascinated.
"As a senior, I've come to realize how much I rely on these professors for everyday help. I'm currently working on my honors thesis, which is a poetry chapbook, and Professor Waldrep has been there every step of the way. He is the kind of professor that will meet with me any time of the day to discuss my work. As I get closer to graduation, I value my time here even more. And getting to work as a tutor at the Writing Center gives me a chance to help students with their creative process, so I also feel like I'm giving back, which is very rewarding."
