I remember sitting in on Professor Gorkin’s Calculus II class when I was visiting and being completely engrossed in the lecture. She isn’t my advisor, but I still meet with her regularly.
"I came to Bucknell because I knew it could take me places. The possibilities after graduation seemed endless. I was looking for a strong university with a mathematics department that would prepare me well for graduate school, and this university has.
"Since being here, I've grown. The student-faculty culture has changed me. As a child, I was always shy. Even as an incoming freshman, I found myself hesitant to talk to people and join clubs. Now, I've gained confidence from the people here, and that has driven me to become a campus leader. Being the head of Math Club and Math Honor Society is time consuming, but rewarding. Being a Residential Assistant gives me the opportunity to work with various students in different residential colleges.
"One of the most amazing parts of the student-faculty rapport here is that the professors motivate their students outside the classroom as well. As a freshman I was selected to join the Putnam Exam Competition Team. Putnam Exam is an annual math competition for undergraduate students in the United States and Canada. My scores were individual my freshman and sophomore years, but during my junior year I was one of three students chosen to represent Bucknell. This year I'll be representing Bucknell again.
"In the future, I'd love to be a mathematics professor here. I remember sitting in on Professor Gorkin's Calculus II class when I was visiting and being completely engrossed in the lecture. She isn't my advisor, but I still meet with her regularly. I'd love to be that professor for another aspiring student. Teaching here would bring me full circle in my Bucknell experience."
