Dance has been one of my greatest experiences at Bucknell. I’ve had to figure out how to express what I want to say through movement, transitions, formations and other elements of dance.
Congratulations on your graduation, Ivan!
"When I was looking at colleges, I wanted a place where I could study both marketing and dance. A representative from Bucknell came to my high school in Canada and talked about Bucknell's Arts Merit Scholarship. From that time, I loved Bucknell because I thought having that kind of scholarship speaks to how much the university supports the arts. Most schools have those kinds of opportunities for athletes and students with good grades. Bucknell does that and supports artists as well. The dance faculty was very understanding of my situation as an international student. They helped me arrange a process to audition for the scholarship. Now I'm fortunate to be an Arts Merit Scholar.
"Dance has been one of my greatest experiences at Bucknell. I performed in the Dance Showcase both semesters of my first year and joined the Bucknell Dance Company in my sophomore year. These experiences have helped me shape my own artistic interests and define the artistic questions that I would like to answer. This semester, I was in the Dance Composition class. We each had to choreograph a piece to be performed in the Choreographer's Showcase. I've had to figure out how to express what I want to say through movement, transitions, formations and other elements of dance, which has not been easy. It's really challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and think outside the box to come up with good ideas.
"Bucknell has really challenged me intellectually — not just in terms of grades, but in terms of understanding material, reasoning through it and thinking critically to formulate my own opinions. I've come to learn that in the 'real' world, there isn't a right answer for everything. I have to make my own judgments to the best of my ability, take responsibility for what I do and learn from it."
Ivan is from Mexico City, Mexico.
