I want to pursue Russian because Bucknell’s program is so oriented toward students and encourages cultural awareness in a unique way.
"I came to college planning to study political science, but once I discovered international relations, I was impressed by how extensive the department's offerings were. I also enjoyed the opportunity to study Russian for the first time.
"I had the chance to study abroad in Germany during my sophomore year. My studies focused on the European Union, and it was an incredible experience that inspired me to keep traveling and minor in Russian. I then spent the summer working as an intern in Russia. After that experience, I officially changed my major to Russian studies and international relations.
"I want to pursue Russian because Bucknell's program is so oriented toward students and encourages cultural awareness in a unique way. My adviser, Professor Ludmila Lavine, has been incredibly supportive, and everyone in the Russian program has a passion for teaching that is inspiring and makes me want to continue my studies.
"I plan to study abroad again as a senior. With support and encouragement from my professors, I am headed back to Russia, where I will live in St. Petersburg. When I was in Russia the first time, I was able to intern for a nonprofit human rights organization. That changed my perspective on what I want to pursue as a career. The internship, which focused on survivors of the Soviet Union, was one of the most eye-opening experiences I've had, and I am planning on pursuing a thesis related to these topics.
"Something really special about Bucknell is the great community relationship with Lewisburg. Community service has always been a big part of my life, and Bucknell has provided a lot of opportunities. I am part of the Rotaract Club and Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, and have been able to reach out to surrounding communities. I am also president of the Leadership Education Alumni Donation council. Bucknell offers many great opportunities for students, and people within the Bucknell community, including alumni, are always willing to support students and take such pride in being Bucknellians."
