August 23, 2013

SpringallGood Evening. My name is Rob Springall and it is my privilege to be Bucknell’s Dean of Admissions. It is the responsibility of my team and me to identify the women and men who would be best suited to be at Bucknell.

On behalf of my team, let me say that we’re really glad you’re here. It’s been a pleasure to hear your stories, to meet many of you in person, and to be the first people to say to you, “Welcome to Bucknell.” I’m also glad to see you all survived Aleks.

Tonight you are formally matriculating into our University. That means your name is entered along side tens of thousands of people enrolled at Bucknell and who have called this place home.

You, the Class of 2017, are an interesting group. You are coming to Bucknell from 35 states in the U.S. and 35 other countries around the world. If I had one name to use, I’d call you “Emily” (there are 12 of you) or “Nicholas” (of which there are 14 here today).

As you all called yourselves when I asked this summer, I’d also call you, “Diverse, eclectic ... and handsome.” I will let you decide amongst yourselves about “handsome.” I’ll strongly agree with the first two.

You are definitely talented and full of potential too. Almost 8,000 students applied for admission for the Class of 2017. Of this outstanding applicant group, just 30 percent were extended an offer of admission. If it were simply a matter of reviewing credentials, and deciding if applicants would be successful, we could have admitted almost everyone who applied.

YOU were admitted because we believe you have the most to gain from Bucknell, and the most to contribute to the campus and the community.

Please remember that learning here is an active and collaborative endeavor. Those gathered here tonight, the rest of my faculty and staff colleagues, and your peers in the Classes of 2014, 2015, and 2016, are all potential partners in learning, in growth, and in your future success.

Simply said, we have high hopes and high expectations for you. Your accomplishments here will change your lives forever and they will leave an indelible impression on Bucknell. Make the best of this time, make us proud, and make yourself proud to be a Bucknellian.

At this time, I would like to invite Mick Smyer, Bucknell’s Provost, to the podium to receive the members of the Class of 2017 on behalf of the University and its faculty and administration.

Provost Smyer, I present to you Bucknell’s Class of 2017. These women and men represent countless interests, superb talents, and great potential. It is with pride I present to you these 935 individuals for matriculation.
