What to Expect

Common Ground equips leaders with the tools to actively and thoughtfully promote respect and understanding of others in their communities. We will participate in activities and discussions that will help us to explore race and ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socioeconomic class and ability, among other topics. You will be challenged to think critically about issues of diversity in an environment open to all perspectives.

Our goals include:

  1. Raising student awareness and understanding of personal, societal and global biases and structures of inequity.
  2. Teaching students to understand this personal connection to launch intellectual and academic inquiry around diversity, democracy and globalization.
  3. Equipping students to be equity change agents in the classroom, boardroom and living room.
  4. Improving campus climate to help retain underrepresented students, to attract underrepresented faculty and to enrich the learning environment for all.
