Bucknell Athletics continues its tradition of excellence in graduation rates, as confirmed by the NCAA annual student-athlete graduation rate survey released Tuesday, Oct. 28. According to the U.S. Department of Education's standards, Bucknell ranks second nationally with a four-class average of 92 percent for student-athletes entering between 2004–05 and 2007–08. Only Stanford, at 95 percent, was higher.
A year ago Bucknell and Stanford tied for the national lead at 93 percent. This year, Stanford, Bucknell, Davidson (91 percent) and Holy Cross (91 percent) were the only four reporting Division I programs to post federal rates above 90 percent.
By the federal guidelines, 10 Bison varsity programs boast perfect 100-percent graduation rates. Those programs are men's and women's swimming and diving, men's water polo, wrestling, field hockey, women's golf, women's lacrosse, softball, women's tennis and volleyball.
Bucknell also scored very well — 96 percent — in the NCAA's Graduation Success Rate (GSR) results. The GSR differs from the federal graduation-rate formula in that the GSR factors in transfer students who graduate, and does not penalize schools for losing transfers who leave in good academic standing.
Eighteen Bison sports programs have perfect 100 percent GSR ratings. They are baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, men's water polo, wrestling, rowing, field hockey, women's golf, softball and volleyball.
Women's track and field and football are also above 90 percent. The Bucknell wrestling team is one of only four programs with a perfect GSR, joining Stanford, Princeton and Cornell.
Bucknell sponsors 27 intercollegiate sports at the Division I level. It is a charter member of the Patriot League and has won the league's all-sports championship in 18 of the 24 years it has been contested. Bucknell ranks fifth in Division I in producing Academic All-Americans.
