LEWISBURG, Pa. — A flamenco dance performance by Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca will kick off the spring semester of performances at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts at Bucknell University on Friday, Feb. 1, at 8 p.m. The performance is sponsored, in part, by Meixell-Diehl Insurance in Lewisburg.
The Weis Center is hosting a special promo code for high school students taking Spanish, with tickets at $5 for students and $10 for their accompanying parent/guardian. Interested attendees should call the Box Office at 570-577-1000 and mention code SPAIN.
Under the direction of Martín Santangelo, the award-winning Noche Flamenca has become Spain's most successful touring company. Formed in 1993 by Santangelo and his Bessie Award-winning wife, Soledad Barrio, the company regularly tours throughout the globe.
Hailed by critics everywhere for its transcendent and deeply emotional performances, Noche Flamenca is recognized as the most authentic flamenco touring company in the field today.
All aspects of flamenco — dance, song, and music — are interrelated and given equal weight in the presentations of Noche Flamenca, creating a true communal spirit within the company — the very heart and soul of flamenco.
Kathryn Maguet, executive director of the Weis Center, says, "This magnificent and mesmerizing ensemble successfully brings to the stage the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world's most complex and mysterious art forms. With this powerful ensemble of virtuoso Spanish guitarists, vocalists, and supporting dancers, Noche Flamenca exemplifies the Spanish ideal of duende."
Tickets are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors 62+ and $10 for youth. Tickets can be charged at www.bucknell.edu/boxoffice or by calling 570-577-1000.
The next event in the Weis Center's series is a free family-friendly kid performance by Lightwire Theater, recent semi-finalists on "America's Got Talent!" They will bring Ugly Duckling and Tortoise and the Hare to life on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m. This unique show will entertain kids and adults alike, as it combines age-old children's stories with cutting edge technology, moving sculpture, and dance to create an unforgettable theatrical experience. The show uses electroluminescent puppetry on a darkened stage to capture the audience's attention and bring children's tales to life.
