The 2015 University calendar will highlight the flowers, plants and trees that make Bucknell's lush campus one of the most beautiful in the nation.

Featuring seasonal images by Lewisburg photographer Gordon Wenzel, the calendar is accented with botanical illustrations by Adrienne Beaver, a Bucknell graphic designer. Professors Mark Spiro, biology, and Duane Griffin, geography, along with members of Bucknell's facilities department, served as advisers.

Spiro and Griffin co-direct the Bucknell Arboretum, which was established in 2008 to enhance biodiversity, provide opportunities for teaching and student research, perform community outreach, preserve historic and significant trees and restore native plantings. Recent projects include restoration of the American chestnut and American elm, which have been decimated by invasive diseases.

Each spring and fall, students take part in service projects in the Arboretum to remove invasive species and plant native trees and shrubs. Student interns also carry out research and update the database of 1,700 trees and maintain the website, which includes an interactive map, a guided walking tour and detailed information about botanical species found on campus.

The arboretum is applying for official accreditation in recognition of its accomplishments and commitment to planting and conservation.

"This calendar is a great opportunity to show off the impressive collection of trees and shrubs that are a result of many years of wise stewardship at Bucknell," said Spiro. "We are thinking well beyond our lifespans and planting strategically now to make sure future generations will continue to enjoy a campus with an exceptional landscape."

The University calendar will be mailed to all alumni, parents and friends who have made a gift of $25 or more since Jan. 1, 2014. If you would like to receive a calendar but are not yet a current donor, please make a gift by Dec. 31 to receive your copy.
