Philippe DuboisBucknell University French professor Philippe Dubois has been selected as the David Morton and Leanne Freas Trout Professor of French. The five-year appointment begins this September and runs through August 2019.

The David Morton and Leanne Freas Trout Professorship of French was established in 2008 by Leanne Freas Trout, a 1950 Bucknell alumna, to honor the memory of her late husband, David, also a member of the Class of 1950, and an Emeritus member of the University's Board of Trustees.

Those selected to hold this professorship are charged to lead students through teaching, personal and directed student scholarship, and collaboration with faculty peers and students in the study of French language and culture, and Francophone Studies.

Dubois joined the Bucknell faculty in 1998 and has served as director for the French and Francophone Studies program. He holds degrees from the Ohio State University and Université Stendhal Grenoble III.

He has taught classes and seminars in French literature and culture, translation studies, queer theory and post-colonial identities, and has supervised independent study and honors theses. He has served as committee chair for the Hilltop Film Series and coordinator of the French & Francophone Film Festival.

The author of numerous articles, book chapters and book reviews, he is working on the monograph, Engendering Gastronomic Conviviality, an exploration of how regional, gender and class identities are linked to food practices.

Dubois, who will give a lecture at the University of Puerto Rico this fall, will use funding from the Trout Professorship to travel to the archives of the European Institute for the History and Cultures of Food (IEHCA) and the French Institute of Pondicherry in India. He plans to incorporate this research into his Learning Beyond the Classroom initiative, a precursor to a proposed minor in Food Systems.
