The Office of International Education has added three new Bucknell-in program offerings, doubling the number of semester-long programs. Starting in spring 2015, students will be able to spend a semester in Athens, Greece; Cape Coast, Ghana; or Washington, D.C. The new programs join the existing semester-long Bucknell en Espana, Bucknell en France and Bucknell in London experiences.
"Our first three Bucknell-in programs were in Europe; now we are broadening around the world," said Stephen Appiah-Padi, director of the Office of International Education. "We want to look across the world and see how Bucknell can be present." | Read a Q&A with Stephen Appiah-Padi.
Bucknell-in programs are supervised by Bucknell faculty who act as teachers and guides. Students take courses that qualify for Bucknell credit with Bucknell and local faculty, ensuring they will not fall behind their classmates in Lewisburg.
"It's an advantage for students because their professors can aid them in adjusting to the new environment, academic structure and different teaching methods used in their new countries," Appiah-Padi said.
Each of the programs marks a historic first for the University.
Bucknell in D.C. is the first semester-long Bucknell-in program offered within the United States. Through a partnership with American University, students will gain access to an array of internship placements in the nation's capital, as well to guest speakers who are policy makers in business, industry and government.
Bucknell in Ghana is the University's first Bucknell-in study abroad program in Africa. Students will examine the cultural values and historical links between Africa and the Americas, and immerse themselves in West African culture through classes with Ghanaian students at the University of Cape Coast, field trips, language and culture learning, and weekend home stays.
BU–PSU Athens, offered in conjunction with Penn State University, is the first joint Bucknell-in semester program. Students will explore the history and culture of the eastern Mediterranean and attend courses at The Athens Centre in central Athens.
Bucknell also offers eight Bucknell-in summer programs on a rotating basis: Barbados, Denmark, Greece and Turkey, Nicaragua, New Orleans (also new in 2015), Northern Ireland, South Africa and the Virgin Islands. Additional study-abroad opportunities are available through more than 150 approved programs.
