It was a capital night for a Bucknell celebration in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 8. More than 500 Bucknell alumni, parents and friends gathered at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery for the final WE DO Tour stop of 2014.
"There are 15 of my classmates here tonight, and I think that's what Bucknell's all about," said David Flinchbaugh '82, P'18. "Because the experience of being with the folks with whom you went through that very interesting time turned into great careers for all of us. We're really enjoying ourselves tonight."
President John Bravman set the stage for the evening, speaking about the University's history, recent accomplishments and plans for the future.
"The president's speech I found very engaging and right to the point about looking to the future and investing in these kids now," said Marjory Sheldon, a parent of two students in the Class of 2017. "They're just so lucky. I wish I could go to Bucknell."
The event was also filled with opportunities to learn about interesting faculty and student research on campus, including lively "snap talks" by professors Eric Martin, management, and DeeAnn Reeder, biology. Guests enjoyed a strolling dinner through a series of interactive academic experiences that highlighted engineering and sustainability, geographic information systems (GIS) and the liberal arts, the new Bucknell In D.C. program, the Bucknell Public Interest Program, the Management Education Initiative, and biodiversity and conservation.
"I cannot say enough about the support and enthusiasm of our alumni, volunteers, families and friends," said Bravman. "It is a privilege to thank them personally for their commitment to our students, and it's exciting to share with them the successes of our faculty and staff. This campaign is bringing us all together on a number of levels and ensuring our continued excellence for generations to come."
Launched publicly in October 2012, the WE DO Campaign for Bucknell University aims to create or strengthen six academic and residential learning initiatives designed to transform Bucknell's education experience.
The campaign will also increase funding for scholarships and financial aid, recruit and retain outstanding faculty, and invest in new facilities. As of Nov. 12, 2014, the WE DO Campaign had raised more than $327 million toward its half-a-billion dollar goal.
