The crowd inside the Hippodrome Theatre sat mesmerized by the student dancers onstage — one an engineering major, the other in management. Their movements were inspired by the theories found in physicist Brian Greene's book The Elegant Universe. The interdisciplinary dance was among the many highlights of the WE DO Campaign Tour stop on Sept. 19 in Baltimore.
"Tonight was about being reminded what Bucknell meant to me always, and how it shaped everything that I am," said Doreen Bolger '71, one of more than 200 alumni, parents and friends who gathered to celebrate the University's recent accomplishments and plans for the future.
The magnificently restored theatre provided a stunning backdrop for presentations by Professors Chris Martine, biology, and Kelly Knox, theatre & dance, who shared highlights of their work in a pair of lively snap talks.
"Having the staff and faculty speak with such passion about what they do was the most enjoyable part for me. It was just tremendous," said Michael Maloney P'16.
The evening included a performance by student dancers Ivan Flores '16 and Ridhi Sahani '18. Flores majors in markets, innovation & design while Sahani studies biomedical engineering, which underscored the interdisciplinary interests and talents of Bucknell students.
After the presentations, guests enjoyed interactive academic experiences and a strolling dinner.
"I can't say enough about the energy of Bucknellians here in Baltimore," said President John Bravman. "We're so grateful for their enthusiasm and support. Their genuine interest in our faculty and students, and their love for the University, are bringing the WE DO Campaign even closer to the goal."
Launched publicly in October 2012, WE DO, The Campaign for Bucknell University aims to create or strengthen six academic and residential learning initiatives designed to transform Bucknell's education experience.
The campaign will also increase funding for scholarships and financial aid, for recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty, and for investments in new facilities. As of Sept. 22, the WE DO Campaign had raised $360 million toward its half-a-billion dollar goal.
