Certified therapy dogs are brought to campus by members of the Susquehanna Trail Dog Training Club twice per semester. Sponsored by the Bucknell Counseling & Student Development Center, the therapy dog events take place during finals week and the first week of classes, when students are often homesick for their pets.

"Numerous psychological studies have shown that our connection with animals, particularly dogs, is historical, neurobiological, social and emotional," said Marina Shafran, associate director of Bucknell's Counseling & Student Development Center. "Pets play a role in our cardiovascular health and help us cope with stress. Their mere presence helps us to interact with people and improve communities, and they might even enhance our immune function."

Therapy dogs have been visiting students at Bucknell for around a decade.
