Filmmaker Barry Jenkins, who wrote and directed the Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning film Moonlight, will give the keynote address at Bucknell University's second annual Diversity Summit on Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts. A moderated discussion with audience Q&A will follow Jenkins' remarks. The event is free and open to the public.

A native of Miami, Jenkins has nine director credits on his résumé, including five short films and two television episodes. He has directed two films: Medicine for Melancholy (2008) and Moonlight (2016), which won three Academy Awards including Best Picture as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Picture — Drama. His first film received three nominations for Independent Spirit Awards, which annually honor the best in independent films, as well as nominations for awards at the Gotham Independent Film Awards and the Chicago and Los Angeles Film Festivals. It won the Marlon Riggs Award from the San Francisco Film Critics Circle for courage and vision in the Bay Area film community.

Moonlight, which debuted last fall and chronicles the coming-of-age of an African-American man in Miami, has received more than 30 awards or nominations for awards from several organizations. In addition to Best Picture, Moonlight won the Academy Award for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay, and cast member Mahershala Ali received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. It was nominated for five additional Oscars, including Best Director, and also received Golden Globe nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Bucknell's second annual Diversity Summit, "Identity, Inclusion & Social Transformation: Centering Gender, Power, and Privilege," will begin with a community dinner immediately preceding Jenkins' speech on March 28. It will continue the following day with panels, workshops, dialogues, posters and other creative presentations that spotlight the expertise and experience of Bucknell students, staff and faculty.
