Masters of Hawaiian Music with George Kahumoku Jr., Nathan Aweau and Kawika Kahiapo will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1, at the Campus Theatre, 413 Market St., as part of the Weis Center's annual series.
The Three Masters, as the trio is often called, are featured regularly at Maui's renowned Slack Key Show and bring Hawaii's unique folk styles — with origins in the early 19th century Hawaiian paniolo (cowboy) culture — to 21st century stages.
Master slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr., known as "Hawaii's Renaissance Man," is a four-time Grammy Award winner and a multiple Na Hōkū Hanohano Award (known as the "Hawaiian Grammys") winner, as well as a vocalist, storyteller, songwriter, author, teacher, sculptor, farmer and chef.
A talented multi-instrumentalist, Nathan Aweau has been part of such award-winning groups as HAPA, Ka'eo and The Ali'i. His seven solo albums have won multiple Na Hōkū Awards, including Male Vocalist of the Year (he is the only person to have won three times), Song of the Year (twice) and Island Album of the Year, among others.
Slack key guitarist David "Kawika" Kahiapo most recently won two 2015 Na Hōkū Awards for his two newest releases, one for Slack Key Guitar Album of the Year and the other for Island Album of the Year. A regular at Jack Johnson's Kokua Fests, his slack key roots and commitment to Hawaiian culture run deep.
General admission tickets for the performance are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors 62+, $5 for youth 18 and under, $5 for Bucknell employees and retirees (limit 2), free for Bucknell students (limit 2), and $5 for non-Bucknell college students (limit 2). Tickets can be purchased online at the Campus Box Office or by calling 570-577-1000.
