Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares (The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices) will bring the heritage of Bulgarian folk songs to the Bucknell University campus at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, at the Weis Center for the Performing Arts.

There will be a free pre-performance talk from 6:45-7:15 p.m. in the Weis Center Atrium Lobby by Professor Paula Davis, theatre & dance. The talk, entitled "The Nosiya is Life: Traditions in Bulgarian Folk Dress," will examine the deep interconnectedness of Bulgarian folk dress with other Bulgarian folk traditions such as music and dance and indeed, life itself. Bulgarian traditional folk dress creates a highly ornamented visual expression of identity layered with meaning and a rich history that reflects the complexities of the cultural and historical geography of the Balkans.

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares is an ensemble of a rare artistic gift and enormous popular appeal. The group was created 50 years ago to enrich the heritage of the Bulgarian solo folk song with harmonies and arrangement that highlighted its beautiful timbres and irregular rhythms.

The singers transform sounds into strange vocal colors as if something other than the human voice. They jubilate, shout, ornament, form fast and perfect glissandos, and let one crazy rhythm follow another. Suddenly the folk cliché no longer applies. With their bell-like voices that seem to float lightly trough space, these women have become international stars whose hypnotic chant circles the globe.

These mystic voices manage to dissolve the separation between East and West, young and old, and pop music and classical tunes. The first album was published in 1975, and their sophomore effort won a Grammy in 1990. Rituals was released by Nonesuch and nominated for a Grammy in 1994. The group has toured with much fanfare throughout Europe, America and Asia.

The performance is sponsored, in part, by James and Rebecca Mauch.

Tickets for the performance are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors 62+, $15 for youth 18 and under, $15 for Bucknell employees and retirees (limit 2), $10 for Bucknell students (limit 2), and $15 for non-Bucknell college students (limit 2). Tickets can be purchased online at the Campus Box Office or by calling 570-577-1000.

Please note that tickets are available in the main auditorium only; the balcony will be closed. Tickets are also available in person from several locations including the Weis Center lobby (weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the CAP Center Box Office, located on the ground floor of the Elaine Langone Center (weekdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).
