Dr. Linda Heffner '70, MD is Professor and Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center. She was born in western Pennsylvania; both of her parents were teachers. She majored in biology at Bucknell University and then earned a Ph.D. in physiology from Cornell University and an M.D. degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Following a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, she completed a research fellowship in reproductive biology at the University of Pennsylvania and a clinical fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Dr. Heffner came to BUSM in 2003 after spending 18 years at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. At varying times during her career she has focused on laboratory research (placental and endometrial biology), clinical care (high risk obstetrics focusing on advanced maternal age and women with very poor obstetrical histories), administration (section chief for maternal-fetal medicine and now department chair) and teaching (responsible for reproduction section of Year II pathophysiology course at both Harvard and Boston University). To no one's surprise, she likes teaching the best. Dr. Heffner is the recipient of eight teaching awards from Harvard and Boston Universities and has been named to Who's Who in Medicine and Health Care, Who's Who in American Women, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in American Education. Her numerous publications include a medical student textbook of reproductive science, a USMLE review in obstetrics and gynecology and both basic and clinical research papers.
Dr. Heffner is the mother of three grown children. Her husband, Dr. Douglas Richardson, was killed in a bicycle accident while riding to work in 2002.
