LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Samek Art Gallery at Bucknell University will host several art exhibitions on campus and in Lewisburg during the spring 2014 semester. Gallery exhibitions and programs are free and open to the public.
Samek Art Gallery "Afrotechtopia," which begins Jan. 21, may be viewed through March 23. This exhibition explores the phenomenon of Afrofuturism — black sci-fi and fantasy culture — in art, music, film, and literature and asks the viewer to consider how these expressions inform our collective envisioning of the future.
"The Cliteracy Project," may be viewed Feb. 12 through March 16. Presented in partnership with the Women's and Gender Studies Department and the Women's Resource Center, "Cliteracy" is a new way of talking about citizenship, sexuality, human rights, and bodies.
"Netsuke: The Evolution of an Object," may be viewed March 29 through June 29. Netsuke were developed as toggles in the 17th century to hold lacquer boxes in the sashes of kimonos. Evolved from simple tools, netsuke developed into intricate works indicative of fashion, class, and culture. These objects and their continuously evolving function call into question the separation of Art, Craft, and Fashion. Guest curator is Frank Fina, Samek Gallery Fellow.
The Annual Senior Student Art Exhibition will be held April 8 to 27. Presented in partnership with the Art and Art History Department, this exhibition showcases culminating work by graduating senior Art majors and Art graduate assistants.
The Samek Art Gallery is located on the third floor of the Elaine Langone Center at Bucknell University, accessible via an elevator. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday during the academic year. Winter break schedule begins Dec. 13 and ends Jan. 21, 2014.
Downtown Art Gallery "Abstraction Today" continues through March 2. Philadelphia-based gallery owner Bridgette Mayer curates this exhibition of five prominent Pennsylvania artists creating abstract art in contemporary culture.
"Warhol: Again for the First Time" begins March 11 and may be viewed through June 29. Celebrating a gift of seven new prints from the Warhol Foundation, this exhibition presents a fresh look at Polaroid and silver-gelatin photographs and prints from our permanent collection.
