For several years Bucknell volunteers have traveled to the Gulf Coast region to help those who lost so much to the destructive power of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Initial work consisted of clearing debris from flooded homes, and "gutting" or taking out the walls, cabinets and appliances, so that the buildings could be reconstructed from the studs and frame out. More recently, delegations have been involved in helping Habitat for Humanity and other non-profit groups build new homes or refurbish damaged houses so residents can return to their communities. Cultural and educational experiences are built into every service-learning project.
The Katrina Recovery Team is dedicated to helping survivors of the devastating 2005 hurricane as they work to rebuild their homes and reclaim their communities. Each year two delegations of volunteers travel to Louisiana and Mississippi to work with non-profit groups who are assisting residents. Students and staff learn about the natural and human forces that led to this tragedy and also consider ways that governments, community groups, and ordinary citizens responded to the initial crisis and are involved in continuing recovery efforts. Our aim is to not only to assist where we can, but to educate ourselves and others about the importance of understanding what happened and the need to advocate for critical changes in coastal restoration, flood protection systems, emergency preparedness, and crisis management.
