LEWISBURG, Pa. — Drummer Sherrie Maricle's quintet Five Play will perform in a jazz concert Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 8 p.m. in the Rooke Recital Hall of the Weis Music Building at Bucknell University.
The concert, which is free to the public, is the second event in the fall semester's Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series at Bucknell, a series made possible by funding from the Weis family with additional support from the Degenstein Foundation.
Five Play, a virtual United Nations of Jazz, is led by drummer Sherrie Maricle and features Anat Cohen on saxophone and clarinet; Jami Dauber on trumpet; Brenda Earle, piano; and Noriko Ueda, bass.
Classics and originals
Five Play fuses world cultures with extraordinary musicianship and a repertoire of innovative arrangements of classic and contemporary standards, as well as original music composed by the band's members.
Formed in January 1999, Five Play has performed at many of the most prestigious concert halls, music festivals, universities and jazz clubs in the United States, including Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. The group has also performed at major festivals in Israel, France, Spain and Portugal.
No. 1 recording
Five Play's premiere recording, On the Brink (Arbors Records), was voted #1 by Nat Hentoff in JazzTimes' 1999 Year in Review issue. Their follow-up release, Five Play ... Plus, (Arbors Records) was voted one of the Top Ten CDs of 2005 by Coda Magazine.
The musicians are the drawn from the nucleus of the DIVA Jazz Orchestra which will perform at Bucknell in March in the Weis Center Events series. For more information, see http://www.divajazz.com/.
The Janet Weis Cabaret Jazz Series closes for the fall semester with a performance Oct. 31 by the extraordinary classic jazz pianist Beegie Adair with Roger Spencer, bass, and Chris Brown, drums. Adair has recorded 24 CDs, ranging from Cole Porter standards to Frank Sinatra classics to romantic World War II ballads. She has accompanied such legendary performers as Chet Atkins, Dolly Parton and Johnny Cash – and also worked with Lucille Ball, Dinah Shore, Mama Cass Elliott and Peggy Lee.
