Extending from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, the first Armenian Empire rose to prominence about 800 BCE. Armenian religion, art, and language are a blend of Eastern and Western cultures.

Armenian, an independent branch of the Indo-European linguistic family, contains many loan words from Iranian languages.

Artifact:  Highly decorated paper scroll with miniature designs, including animal shapes; five complete prayers in Armenian script, late 18th - early 19th century CE.
