School of Management debuts at Bucknell as program grows

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The School of Management made its official debut this semester at Bucknell University, taking a step toward the former department developing into a college that will build on the strengths of Bucknell’s liberal arts tradition.
The move to a school and eventually a college will enhance the success of the University’s largest program in developing a robust curriculum that addresses changing organizational and management needs and in recruiting the best students and faculty, said Doug Allen, associate dean of the school.
“The school’s mission is to educate students to be both thoughtful and capable – to be able to think critically and creatively about the world and to be able to act in that world, especially through the management of organizations,” Allen said. “This progression of the program will support a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary effort with faculty from the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering that fosters this liberal arts approach to management education."

College of Arts and Sciences The school, which will continue under the College of Arts and Sciences until it becomes a college, enrolls about 530 undergraduate students and has 19 full-time and three adjunct faculty members. The school will work to hire 14 new faculty members over the next few years to reduce the student-to-faculty ratio and support new learning programs.
Throughout much of its history, management, or some variation of business administration, has been organized as a department, except from 1962 to 1970 when it was organized as the College of Business Administration and included accounting and economics. The idea of creating a management college has been discussed for decades. More serious discussions started in 2004 when then-new President Brian C. Mitchell asked all of the departments to “blue sky” ideas for developing or enhancing programs that would help the University achieve new levels of excellence.
As the Department of Management started work on a new curriculum it expressed interest in investigating the idea of becoming a college. As a result, President Mitchell commissioned the College of Management Advisory Committee, which included deans, faculty members, students and an outside facilitator to investigate the wisdom and feasibility of creating a college.
Board of Trustees Over the span of three board meetings, the Board of Trustees heard the findings of the committee and reviewed curricular, budgetary and operating plans for the proposed college before approving the formation of a school as an intermediate step.
The school will continue to develop its plans and work with Development and Alumni Relations to raise $100 million to support the transition to a college.
Academic majors in the school currently include accounting and management. Future programs of study being considered include accounting and financial management; global management; managing for sustainability; managing information and technology; and marketing, consumption and designing innovations.
Era of globalization “This era of globalization calls for management education that combines technical mastery with a fundamental grounding in the liberal arts,” Allen said. “There has been a change in mindset in terms of the kinds of employees and executives organizations are seeking in this increasingly complex world. Today’s leaders need a more interdisciplinary and enlightened education to be effective, and Bucknell can address that need.”
