Eight Bucknell faculty members were promoted this year to the rank of full professor. The Board of Trustees awards the rank of full professor to those individuals who have demonstrated their excellence in teaching, scholarship and service to the University community, as judged by their faculty colleagues, students and alumni.

"A Bucknell education enables students to interact daily with faculty who exemplify a passion for learning and a dedication to teaching and scholarship," says the University's mission statement. This year's new full professors have a passion for learning about subjects as diverse as the writings of a 17th-century English female philosopher, ways to mitigate damage from Pennsylvania's old coal mines and the dynamics of fluids at the intersection of land and sky.

Bucknell's faculty demonstrates its dedication to teaching through innovation in the classroom. For example, the College of Arts and Sciences recently approved a new College Core Curriculum. "One of the hallmarks of the newly proposed curriculum is a set of integrative perspectives courses," says Provost Mick Smyer. Because each of these courses will be taught by a team of a faculty representing multiple divisions in the Arts and Sciences, students "will have the experience of seeing interdisciplinary problem solving and perspectives on problem solving in the classroom."

Building bridges
Bucknell continues to build bridges "to the broader world outside of Lewisburg and outside of Union County, both across the country and around the world," Smyer says. This year's new full professors demonstrate that commitment in roles ranging from a poet and author who heads an international society dedicated to Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, a historian who studies the dialect and daily life of the common people of 16th and 17th century Germany, and a geographer who leads a service learning summer course in Nicaragua's poorest areas.
