LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University has received funding for an endowed professorship in Environmental Studies, President Brian C. Mitchell has announced.
The David and Patricia Ekedahl Professorship in Environmental Studies is the gift of David '56 P'79 and Patricia Ekedahl P'79. A current faculty member will be selected for this position, which begins in September and will be awarded in terms of up to five years.
"We are grateful for the Ekedahls' generous support of Environmental Studies at Bucknell," Mitchell said. "As a liberal arts university, we have an extraordinary opportunity to examine complex issues, like the environment, from many perspectives. This professorship will provide lasting resources to strengthen our academic program."
Teaching and collaborative research
The professorship will be open to any current Bucknell faculty member whose scholarship focuses on the study of human effects on the environment and environmental effects on human life, health, culture, commerce and civilization. The recipient of the professorship will lead students through teaching and collaborative research and scholarship. He or she will also collaborate with faculty peers and students in both specialized and interdisciplinary study of environmental issues.
Endowed professorships are established in perpetuity and awarded in three- or five-year appointments. They are used by universities to reward outstanding teaching and scholarship by current tenure-track faculty and to recruit superior faculty from other institutions. These positions provide recipients with opportunities to pursue scholarly research and are often accompanied by a related research fund.
A retired financial analyst, Mr. Ekedahl has served on Bucknell's Board of Trustees since 1993. The Ekedahls' gift marks the fourth professorship established at Bucknell since the comprehensive campaign began in July 2007, following the David Morton and Leanne Freas Trout Professorship of French and Francophone Studies and the Ellen P. and Samuel L. Williams Professorships of Music.
