LEWISBURG, Pa. — Bucknell University alumni, families, faculty, staff and friends have committed more than $150 million in gifts and pledges to the most ambitious comprehensive campaign in Bucknell history, President John Bravman announced today.

Three years into the campaign, Bucknell has raised $150,319,549, nearly 40 percent of the $400 million goal. In addition, the University has received almost $20 million in state and federal support during this time, by far the most it has ever raised from such sources.

"On behalf of Bucknell, I extend thanks to all of our donors," said President Bravman, who took office as the University's 17th president on July 1. "The loyalty of Bucknellians and their commitment to the students have already made a deep impression on Wendy and me. Bucknellians truly love this institution. They value their experience here, and have once again demonstrated great confidence in Bucknell's future."

$150 million
Scott Rosevear, interim vice president of Development and Alumni Relations, noted that $150 million was the initial goal for the University's most recent campaign, which concluded in 2000.

"We've surpassed that mark, even though we are still in the private phase of this campaign," he said. "More alumni are becoming aware that private giving has always been essential to the quality of Bucknell's academic program — just as it was crucial to Bucknell's founding. We are grateful for every gift."

More than 29,000 individuals have made commitments to the campaign, which recently entered its fourth year. With their gifts and pledges to the Annual Fund, Bucknellians also set a participation record in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

"Our recent graduates, in particular, are realizing that their participation at any level of giving makes a real difference," Rosevear said.

Scholarships, faculty and facilities
Among the highlighted campaign designations:

  • Scholarship giving, the highest priority of the campaign, has surpassed $53 million - more than one-third of total commitments. The University remains focused on ensuring that the best students of all backgrounds are able to attend Bucknell, regardless of family financial circumstances.
  • Support for faculty and academic programs continues to grow, with $35 million in commitments to date. Four new endowed professorships established since the beginning of the campaign support music, French and environmental studies. Gifts and pledges to the academic program have benefitted many areas, including new academic centers, program innovation, interdisciplinary initiatives and a proposed College of Management. Specific designations range from the Susquehanna River Initiative and engineering programs to the Bucknell University Opera Company and undergraduate research.
  • The development of new facilities, in accordance with the campus master plan, has garnered nearly $17 million in commitments. Recently completed facilities include the West Fields athletics complex and Bucknell Landing, a canoe and kayak dock on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River. Lead construction projects currently in development include Academic West and Academic East, which will anchor a new interdisciplinary quad south of Bertrand Library; as well as a nearby Arts Center and a student housing complex with apartment-style residences and a student center.

"This is a significant moment in University history," Rosevear said. "President Bravman's arrival has added a new momentum to Bucknell's plans for the future. We have a strong foundation for growth in The Plan for Bucknell and the campus master plan, and a tremendous amount of community support. Every gift pushes us to an even higher level of academic excellence, and we truly appreciate that so many Bucknellians believe in the University and have chosen to make it one of their philanthropic priorities."
