LEWISBURG, Pa. - Starting this week, students may use their Campus Dollars via their BU ID to pay for items at a number of downtown businesses.

Campus Dollars are a prepaid flexible spending account that serves as an alternative to cash or checks.

Lewisburg merchants that will accept Campus Dollars include CVS, Dwellings, Market St. Deli, What's in Store, and Zelda's Cafe. The Barnes & Noble at Bucknell University bookstore, Mya's Café, Retrah, Sheetz and other local businesses soon will add the service.

"This is something students have wanted for a long time," said Charlie Kreitler, president of Bucknell Student Government, which approached University officials about the idea several years ago."With the new bookstore downtown, this is a great way time to be starting this program and to increase traffic in town. Our hope is we will get more stores (interested in participating) as they see the benefits of this. Overall, it is going to be a great step forward for the Bucknell-Lewisburg relationship."

Campus Dollars also may be used to pay for laundry, dining and other campus purchases. They may not be used for alcohol, tobacco products, lottery tickets and gift certificates. Campus Dollars also may not be used to rent Zipcars, which have to be paid for with a commercial credit card.

Campus Dollars at the LC mall
Also starting this week, students may use Campus Dollars or cash to pay for purchases at the student mall in the ELC.

"Those sales previously were handled by the University bookstore, but when they moved downtown, we lost the ability to allow students to sell and purchase goods in the mall area through their cash register system," Director of Business Services Lori Wilson said. "The Bookstore system has been replaced with an extension of the Campus Dollars program to allow students to continue their sales and purchases and is now processed through the Office of Campus Activities and Programs."

Mall sales hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Student groups will continue to work with the Events Management Office to schedule space and complete approval forms.  For more information on this program, please contact the Office of Campus Activities and Programs.

BSG will sponsor an open forum about the downtown program at noon Thursday, Sept. 9, in the ELC Forum. Additional questions should be directed to Wilson.

Dining Dollars
Dining Dollars  are connected with University meal plans. They can only be used at on-campus dining venues. Dining Dollars carry over from semester to semester and year to year but become invalid upon graduation or separation from the University. They are not refundable or transferable.

Students can check their account balances and see recent activity for both Campus Dollars and Dining Dollars in the "My Accounts" section of myBucknell.

The University last year introduced an online payment system that allows students and their families to make electronic payments to their billing accounts as well as add funds to both Campus Dollars and Dining Dollars. The payment system is located on a Bucknell website. Campus Dollars and Dining Dollars can be added using cash or check at the Finance Office in Marts Hall. In addition, Campus Dollars can be added at the Card Services and Student Transit in the Elaine Langone Center, and Dining Dollars can be added at the Bison and the Dining Office.

The BU ID also is used for entry to all residential buildings (except for housing at Bucknell West) and a few academic areas with protected equipment. Using the BU ID, students are able to enter their own residence hall at any time. Students, faculty and staff may enter other buildings as needed during normal business hours.

The Card Services and Student Transportation Office, which is part of the Office of Housing and Residential Life, is responsible for the creation and distribution of the BU ID. For more information, visit Card Services.
