Barbara Altmann

Provost Barbara Altmann joined Bucknell in August 2015. Her responsibilities include overseeing academic and student affairs and related programs.

Altmann came to Bucknell from the University of Oregon, where she served as Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and oversaw the university's undergraduate and graduate studies, curriculum and program development. A professor of French, she previously directed the Oregon Humanities Center and headed the university's Department of Romance Languages.

Altmann's research area is late-medieval French language, literature, and manuscripts. She has published extensively on 14th- and 15th-century French literature on topics that include the representation of gender in the late Middle Ages and the poetry of Christine de Pizan. Her research awards include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

She holds a bachelor's degree in Romance Languages from the University of Alberta and a Ph.D. in medieval French language and literature from the University of Toronto.
